Mariano has been painting since he was six years old. He practiced and studied art at first with water colours then progressed to rendering in graphite, charcoal and conte. Later in his pre-teens he started drawing in ink & oil pastels and early teens in egg tempera and acrylic.
Mariano began his intense study and mastery of oil painting at about age fourteen (47 years ago) . Formally trained by Raymond Mainer (1912-1979) in traditional archival oil painting practices - Mariano has continued and developed these methods with many masterworks over the years. At age 19 he began his studies of architecture at St.Clair college - acquiring a skill for details and perspective. Mariano paints & teaches daily at his studio in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Mariano was past Vice President & Executive Secretary of the Arts Council Windsor & Region, Member of the Gibson Gallery in Amherstburg, Leamington Art Center and ArtSpeak Gallery in Windsor. Mariano is a past board member of the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Windsor & Essex and a board member of the Artist Open Studio Tour Windsor & Essex. Mariano has exhibited at numerous shows over the past years and has judged other art exhibition. Mariano focuses on portraiture, action compositions, still life and land & seascapes.

About the painting process
Mariano paints with passion in the "Grand Tradition" of oil painters. His painting practice follows in the ways of centuries old traditional painting organic methods and techniques. Mariano uses quality materials: building and stretching his own canvases from Belgian Linens , then sizing the canvas and making his own oil ground emulsions. He also builds his own panels from Baltic birch, Mahogany, Walnut & Oak and cradles them in poplar or red oak. The panels are then applied with sizing followed by a ground made from an ancient oil emulsion formula. Mariano renders comprehensive studies of his subject matter; he applies them to a full compositions drawing before transferring the image to the canvas or panel. He does a full coat under-painting in a mono pigment (grisaille or verdaille or iron oxide). Then he starts the glazing process, slowly blocking in compositional elements from dark to light. Mariano blends his own mediums and glazes from raw materials. He uses artist high quality oil pigments - these follow archival light-fast permanent painting practices that will last. He continues with many layers of glazing and other painting techniques such as scumbling, impasto, chiaroscuro, sfumato and stippling. Other techniques are traditional secrets developed over the years. The painting is meticulously finished in details until the artist is satisfied before his signature is applied. The painting is sealed after the oil has oxidized with damar varnish. Is Mariano a master artist...... Mariano believes that the patron needs to connect to the art by telling a narrative with a complete composition. Mariano’s paintings express his understanding and the depth of experience that the artist in him is conveying to his audience. “Art is in all of us, immerse yourself in the expression and experience, that is the canvas of life”.

Mariano brings experience, education and masterly skills to his paintings. Mariano uses the fineness quality materials. supports, grounds & oils - following archival practices. He renders & designs a full composition before transferring the image onto canvas or panel. Applying an isolating layer, an under-painting, followed by colour & glazing applications along with many traditional techniques that take time ( minimum 100 hours or more depending on the size and complexity) to accomplish the desired visual effect. This takes patience, skill & time, the final cost is based on this execution.
